Society has no singular object that can be photographed, yet Vera Drebusch’s unique sociological perspective cannot be denied.

With questions concerning the nature of nationhood in mind, Vera drove 10,000 miles, crossing the US twice, to visit election campaign rallies, demonstrations, veterans’ meetings, and memorials built in praise of stronger borders and the hard separation of peoples.

Through photography, Vera reflects a United States entrapped in the ceaseless production of its own contradictory self-images. Her photos rethink images as actors, and artistically absorb and collapse the contrast between population and politics.

„Gesellschaft ist ein unfotografierbarer Gegenstand. Und dennoch ist der soziologische Blick von Vera Drebusch nicht zu leugnen.
Mit der Frage, was eine Nation ist oder sein kann fuhr sie zu Wahlkampfveranstaltungen, Demonstrationen, Veteranentreffen, zu Museen, die sich damit brüsten, wie sie die amerikanisch-mexikanische Grenze „sichern”.
Das Nord-Amerika, das Vera Drebusch zeigt, produziert Bilder ohne Unterlass und benötigt Fotografie nur als Spiegel. Ihr Verdienst ist es, Bilder als Akteure neu zu denken und künstlerisch den Kontrast von Pop und Politik aufzufangen, der in der Politik längst geebnet wurde.”
